More than 12 thousand calls in 2017 to the Green AIDS and IST ISS

They are mostly male, heterosexual, over 30 and resident in the North. This is the profile of those who turned to the AIDS Green Telephone and Sexually Transmitted Infections (TV AIDS and IST) 800.861.061 of the ISS in 2017.
The relevant figure concerns the decline in phone calls by women, they were over 35% in 1987 (the year in which TV AIDS and IST were set up), around 13% in 2017.


From 1 January to 31 December 2017, in fact, TV AIDS and IST received a total of 12.694 phone calls, of which 11.035 (86.9%) from men, 1,657 (13.1%) from people of sex female and 2 from transsexual people. The distribution by age group shows that it is above all people aged 20 to 39 (67.1%) who turn to the Service and, in particular, 28.8% between 20 and 29 years and 38 , 3% between 30 and 39 years. The median age of users is 34 years.

As for the geographical distribution, 5,476 calls came from Northern Italy (43.1%), from the Center 3.729 (29.4%), from the South 2.650 (20.9%), from the 800 Islands (6.3%) .

On the occasion of the World Day of the Fight against AIDS that is celebrated on December 1, the Minister of Health Giulia Grillo and the Mayor of Rome Virginia Raggi at 18.30 on Friday, November 30 will light red the Pyramid Cestia which will remain symbolically illuminated for the whole day of December 1st. An awareness message will also be shown during the event.

The National Service of HIV / AIDS / IST Counseling “Telefono Verde AIDS and IST – 800861061”, Saturday 1 December 2018, will be active, from 10.00 to 18.00. Simultaneously through the Skype contact “uniticontrolaids” it will be possible even for those who live outside the Italian borders to contact the TV experts AIDS and IST.

Furthermore, on 1 December the email address tvalis@iss.it will be available, exclusively dedicated to deaf people, in order to allow this target to receive scientifically correct and up-to-date information on HIV infection and on other STIs. “Know your state” is the slogan UNAIDS has chosen this year for the World AIDS Day 2018.

Over the course of 2017, over two-thirds of the phone calls received on TV AIDS and IST are attributable to people who said they had heterosexual relationships (66.9%). This includes clients of prostitutes and transsexuals (24.3%), a target that is not easy to identify and reach, which would seem to prefer telephone interaction with AIDS and IST TV experts to receive information on risk of IST. As for the other groups of users who have more often turned to the Service, in 22.1% of cases, there are people who, although they have not implemented risky behaviors, are afraid of having been exposed to HIV or other etiological agents.

Again in 2017, the percentage of “New Telephone Calls” is equal to 57.6%. There are 7,307 people who have chosen to turn to TV AIDS and IST for the first time, often as a result of the use of social networks, forums and search engines. On the contrary, among the users who have already contacted the Service before, there is a considerable number of people with psychological problems who call repeatedly.

From the AIDS and IST TV data we can obtain further significant information about the proportion of phone calls in which users declare that they have carried out, at least once in their lifetime, the test for the search for anti-HIV antibodies. In 2017, this share amounted to 38.1% and fell to 19.1% among users who turned to the Service for the first time.

The men were more interested in the transmission methods of the agents responsible for the STIs, while the women were more interested in the indications on the diagnostic tests and on the issues associated with misinformation.
In 2017, TV AIDS and IST received 1,272 calls (equal to 10.0% of the total calls received) by young people aged between 15 and 24, of these 1,104 (86.8%) received by users male and 168 (13.2%) by female users.

The Green AIDS Telephone and Sexually Transmitted Infections: over thirty-one years of prevention activity
The Green AIDS Telephone and Sexually Transmitted Infections (TV AIDS and IST) 800.861.061 is an anonymous and free National Service, located within the “Communication” area of ​​the Operative Unit Psycho-socio-behavioral Research, Communication, Training ( OU RCF) of the Department of Infectious Diseases (DMI) of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS), which on 20 June 2018 reached the important milestone of the thirty-one years of activity. The Service was, in fact, established on 20 June 1987 by the National Commission for the Fight against AIDS of the Ministry of Health, in a historical period in which AIDS was a disease characterized by high mortality among young adults and, without effective treatment, constituted a major health and social emergency, with a strong impact on the media.

TV AIDS and IST, for over thirty-one years, carries out, from Monday to Friday, from 1.00 pm to 6.00 pm, counseling activities for the prevention of HIV, AIDS and IST, as well as in Italian also in English, thanks to the commitment of researchers-experts in the area of ​​infectious diseases. A consultant in legal matters is also present on Monday and Thursday from 2.00 pm to 6.00 pm.

The Skype contact “uniticontrolaids” is also active, which ensures that those who do not live in Italy reach the AIDS and IST TV experts in the time slot from 14:00 to 17:00 on Monday and Thursday.
From December 2017 it was also started in collaboration with the Department of Comparative Linguistic and Cultural Studies, Ca ‘Foscari University of Venice, the free e-mail service tvalis@iss.it dedicated exclusively to deaf people, is aimed at providing scientific information on Sexually Transmitted Infections.
